First Spring with Your Baby: San Diego Edition
Eh we kind of have spring here in California. But sort of not really.
Spring in California, especially San Diego, is on the cooler side, think like 60’s with a slight breeze but nothing too crazy. So I’ll base it off of our local weather, and then go into areas that have an actual spring like the east coast 😂
Local San Diego Spring
Think layers. For you and baby.
The closer to the coast you get the cooler it’ll be. May grey and June gloom are a real thing here on top of the coastal layer of fog.
The easiest thing to do is a long sleeve onesie with pants, socks, and shoes/boots. And then a sweater or hoodie over the onesie. A light beanie over baby’s head keeps more heat in (and they look freaking adorable as well).
While you’re out and about, a blanket covering them in a stroller is great. If you’re baby wearing your body produces heat as well, so checking on them regularly is a must. Some babies run warmer than others (like my little one, he didn’t wear pants until he was 6 weeks old).
When baby is too warm, take a layer off (typically start with blanket). If they’re still too warm after 10-15 minutes take another layer off Like the beanie or the sweater. And that’ll be your whole day. Taking off and putting layers on.
Vacationing in Spring
It’s super similar to what you would be doing locally BUT the layers may need to be thicker and or an added one. So instead of a long sleeve onesie and a sweater, it may be a shirt, a long sleeve, and a sweater.
Possibly a thicker blanket as well. It’s a good rule of thumb that whatever you’re wearing, add one more layer for baby. And then again, just check on them frequently to make sure they’re not cold or too warm.
San Diego is easy
We’re pretty blessed here in San Diego that we have easy seasons for the most part. There’s not many drastic weather changes, no snow on the ground in winter (which I personally hate as I love seasons), mild springs, typically comfortable summers (albeit a few intense heat waves with triple digit weather), and mild falls again.
You’ll figure out you baby’s body temperature and how hot or cold they typically run pretty quickly. It’s also easy to add extra clothing in the car as a safety measure for not only spare clothes to change in to if they have a massive blow out, but also if the weather changes rapidly and they need an extra layer.
Just carry a big bag and stick all the shit in there 😂 Ok that’s super inconvenient, but having options makes life super easy when you’re living in layers.
