FAQ’s
How did you become a doula?
I became a doula after the birth of my son. My husband was useless during his birth (love him to death), but we didn’t know that was how he was going to react. There was a nurse the last 4 hours I was in L&D who was an angel, and the way she treated me (with respect, she validated my feelings, listened to me, and supported me) is how I want my clients to feel the entire time.
Why is birth photography such an important investment?
May be an unpopular opinion, but I feel that birth photography is WAAAAAY more important than having your wedding photographed. There I said it.
There is no do over with birth photography. You want to make sure the person you hire is skilled and knowledgable in the birth space, is respectful of everyone in the birth space, and produces quality photos.
You get what you pay for rings true here.
Why did you become a postpartum doula?
Because I was noticing that my a lot of birth clients were really struggling (even more than pre-covid) with the postpartum time. I want to be able to provide that support if that’s something they feel is important. I got tired of just “leaving” them after our last postpartum meeting or when I delivered a gallery.
And while yes it’s something that people pay for, the support that you receive from a postpartum doula, even if it’s just a few hours a day, is fucking priceless.
How did you become a birth photographer?
I’ve always loved photography, so it kind of organically grew as I was starting my business. I finally just said “fuck it” and followed my dream and have never regretted it or looked back since.
Do we meet before the birth?
Yes! For doula/photo clients, we for sure meet beforehand. I try to fit in at least 2 prenatals before the birth. For birth photography/videography I try and attend the 36/37 week home visit if you’re planning a home birth, otherwise we typically just meet virtually or at a coffee shop for a quick chat about your birth preferences just so I’m in the loop and not a stranger. But it also depends on what’s going on with the current pandemic and whether or not it would be safer to do everything virtually before the birth.
Do you love your job?
FUCK YES I do! I mean how amazing is it to witness people’s power and doing things they KNOW is hard, and yet still accomplishing it!? And I am allowed on this with WITH YOU!? However you birth your baby, you STILL BIRTHED YOUR BABY!! And that’s so fucking badass to be a part of.
Why is having a doula important?
It’s so difficult to explain. The continuity of support. Being able to be a sounding board. Having emotional and physical support prenatally, during the birth, and then postpartum as well. Your doula can be your person during this season if that’s what you need. They can also simply be in the shadows walking with you on this journey. The way each doula practices is so different, so finding one you REALLY connect with is the most important thing.
How long are you with me for birth?
I typically join you when you’re in active labor and remain with you until 1-2 hours after baby is born! We’re gonna get real close during your birth. However, on the day of I try and keep it as fluid and flexible as possible and base it off how you’re feeling (because you know your body better than anyone else)!
